We all know the dangers of the sun, especially in summer when UV rays are strongest. But what we often forget is that even clothing does not always provide adequate protection. A classic cotton T-shirt can let through a significant amount of ultraviolet rays. At G-Heat, we have therefore developed a simple and effective solution: UPF50+ fabric, designed to protect your skin without making you melt in the heat. Here's how it works.
Why sun protection is essential: the effects of UV rays on your skin
UV rays are invisible... but their effects are very real. Premature aging, sunburn, and even skin cancer: prolonged exposure without protection can have serious consequences. And no, a little cloud or a regular T-shirt isn't enough.
UVA: the rays that mark the skin
These are the most insidious rays: UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and act silently. They accelerate skin aging, alter skin elasticity, and can cause premature spots and wrinkles. Even if you don't burn, your skin is still taking a beating. Daily protection is therefore essential.
UVB: responsible for sunburn
More “visible,” UVB rays are what cause sunburn. They are most intense in summer but are present all year round. Their cumulative effect is also dangerous, particularly in terms of the risk of skin cancer. It is therefore crucial to protect yourself whenever you spend time outdoors.
What is UPF50+ and how does it protect your skin?
UPF vs SPF: we explain the difference
You are probably familiar with SPF, the index used for sunscreen. For textiles, it is UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) that applies. The higher the index, the more the garment blocks UV rays. Here is an overview:
- UPF 15 to 20: moderate protection (93 to 95% of UV rays filtered)
- UPF 30 to 40: good protection (97 to 97.5%)
- UPF 50+: excellent protection (98%+ of UV rays blocked)
We use this last rating for our UPF50+ T-shirts to offer you the best possible barrier against the sun's rays.
How does it work?
1. Dense weave: a physical barrier
UPF50+ fabrics are designed with a very tight weave that prevents UV rays from passing through the fabric. You can't see it with the naked eye: it's the density of the fibers that makes the difference. And this is achieved without sacrificing breathability or comfort.
2. Protective treatments: going the extra mile
Some fabrics also receive UV protection treatments, often based on titanium dioxide or zinc. These elements further improve the fabric's ability to filter UV rays, while ensuring that the protection remains durable over time. However, it is important to note that to maintain effectiveness, it is best to avoid harsh washing or fabric softeners.
Why UPF50+ fabric is much more than just a T-shirt
Wearing a regular T-shirt does not guarantee real protection. On average, a white cotton T-shirt lets through up to 40% of UV rays. In contrast, a UPF 50+ T-shirt blocks more than 98%, without you having to slather yourself in sunscreen every time you go out. It's the perfect companion for all your outdoor activities, whether it's cycling, hiking, or even a day at the beach or on a construction site.
And as a bonus? It's lightweight, breathable, comfortable... and much more durable than you think.
